TPS22916: Using ship mode as in TIDA-00556 -> Why PMOS instead of diode

Hello!

In the Design Guide: TIDA-00556 the TPS22916 is used to implement a ship mode.

To exit the ship mode, a button is pressed, which enables the on pin of the IC via a PMOS.

Would a diode instead of the PMOS work the same? Are there any advantages in using a PMOS?
