TPS61023: Start Up Voltage

Part Number: TPS61023
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61022, TPS61021A

Hi

I am working on a project where I need to boost the voltage from a very low voltage source 0.65V (Input) to 5V  1 Amp output, The datasheet suggest the TPS61023 is having a wide input voltage range from 0.5V to 5.5V.

I am a bit unclear about the startup- voltage, It suggests a minimum 1.8V input voltage for startup, Can TPS61023 be used with the above mentioned parameters?

  • Hi Pranav,

    Thanks for using TPS61023. This device needs at least 1.8V to start up, after VOUT reaches above 2.2V, the VIN UVLO switches to 0.5V. This means that you may need to have a higher VIN to support start-up, after that you will get lower UVLO.

    TPS61023's current limit is too low for your case, to get 0.65VIN to 5VOUT/1A, you will need at least 7.7A limit. If considering efficiency of ~80%, the realistic current limit should be above 10A.

    What is your input source coming from? How long does this 1A last? It would be nice to recommend you proper device if you could share me with more information.

  • Hi

       Thanks for the Input, here is a brief description of my project, There are multiple monitoring stations located at remote places where we have to install a device to measure the incoming voltage(DC) and transmit the data through internet, The source is a constant current source but having different voltages at different locations, our minimum operable voltage that we can  get is 0.6V, The device's major current requirement is to transmit data which takes up to 1A bust current while transmitting data.

    Looking for a device which can start up at low voltage,

  • Hi Pranav,

    Thank you for your information. i checked the maximum current TPS61022 (out highest current capability boost) can output for VIN=0.6V and VOUT=5V is only about 500mA.

    The other device may support your case, but efficiency of 0.6Vin to 5Vo is a big problem. The efficiency at that point is only about 60%.

    How long does this 1A pulse last? This is an important point. I will need this info to check internally with marketing.

  • Hi

        After long discussion we have finally changed the IOT module to a very low power module so the Pulse current of 1A is not an issue now.

       With the new module our current consumption will not exceed 80mA. But our minimum starting voltage remains the same of 0.65V. since the pulsating current is gone, Can you suggest some suitable device with a very low starting voltage.

  • Hi Pranav,

    Sure, in this case there are more devices meeting your requirement.

    Input range: 0.5V to 5.5V;

    Output voltage: 5V

    Maximum peak current consumption: 80mA;

    From the spec above TPS61022, TPS61023, TPS61021A. The quiescent current is TPS61022>TPS61023>TPS61021A. If you prefer low IQ then TPS61021A will be a good choice. Thanks!
