BQ25170: combination with BQ2970 functionality

Part Number: BQ25170
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2973, BQ25150

Hi,

I need to charge a single 170 mAh Li-Ion battery and want to isolate it in case of overcurrent/overvoltage events. Using BQ25170 and BQ2973 looks most appropriate, but a combination of both in one part would be even better. But I cannot find a charger which also includes battery protection circuitry besides over voltage protection. The only reason I can think of to separate the battery protection circuitry is to avoid a single point failure which takes out the protection circuitry together with the chargers own limiters. Am I defeating the purpose of a separate battery protector when I want it to come with the charger? Or is there such a part and I did not find it?

Reagrds,

Peter

  • Hi Peter,

The BQ25170 provides overvoltage and overcurrent protection during charging, but does not protect against overcurrent or undervoltage during battery discharge. There is not a linear charger product with build in protection to the level of the BQ2973. A linear charging device with powerpath such as the BQ25150 will offer a bit more battery protection, but it would still be a good idea to have a protector.

In general the BQ25170 and similar devices provide protection during charging and are often turned off or in a low power state when not charging. The external battery protection device provides protection to the battery at all times. This difference is one reason the circuitry is kept separate.

  • Hi Garrett,

Thank you very much for your answer. That makes complete sense and I will use both parts in my new design.
