UCC2891: Secondary-side regulation

Part Number: UCC2891
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , , UCC2892, UCC2893, UCC2894

Hello!

Can I use your UCC2891X with Secondary-side regulation?

I do not have auxiliary winding and would like to power the IC from the primary winding and use an optocoupler from secondary for feedback.

Is it possible?

Thanks and regards,

  • Hello Omar,

Thank you for your interest in TI controllers.

Your question is a little ambiguous because there are more than one controller with similar part numbers but different functions. I will answer both cases.

UCC28910 and UCC28911 are high-voltage (off-line) flyback controllers with built-in MOSFET using  primary-side regulation.  Both require an AUX winding for feedback and timing sensing. Neither can be made to operate with an optocoupler signal from the secondary.

UCC2891, UCC2892, UCC2893, and UCC2894 are low-voltage active-clamp flyback controllers and are specifically designed for opto-coupled secondary-side feedback, and do not need an AUX winding.  If your input voltage is less than 110Vdc, then this controller family is the right one to consider for your application.
