TPS650861: Maximum input and output capacitance on the FET

Part Number: TPS650861
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD86360Q5D, CSD87350Q5D,

I have a question about the MOSFET power block for Buck 1, 2 and 6.

What is the maximum capacitance that they can drive?

The two power blocks I am looking at are the CSD87350Q5D and the CSD86360Q5D.

I know the CSD87350Q5D is recommended in the datasheet, but I want to minimize power loss so I am leaning towards the CSD86360Q5D. However, the capacitance is 1000pF greater, and I want to make sure that it is not outside of what the TPS650861 is capable of handling.

Thank you

Albert

  • Hi Albert,

I do not have any data on testing TPS650861 with that specific FET, what is the current level you are looking to utilize this FET for? Going with a FET larger than CSD87350Q5D very well may lead to thermal issues due to the higher gate capacitance which will slow down the turn on time for the FET. CSD86360Q5D may work for this system, although you would need to do test it for your specific use case. I would recommend sticking with CSD87350Q5D if possible.

    Best regards,

    Layne J

  • OK thank you Layne!

I think so to, we only need 20A on the FET so the CSD87350Q5D should be enough then.
