LM338: Spice model

Part Number: LM338

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Is there an available SPice model for LM338? or a similar device that customer can use with spice model available?

Thanks and regards,

Art

  • Hi Art,

The LM338 was designed before PSpice models were developed, as such there is no model for this device.  We generate Spice models for all of our newer linear regulators so if the customer would like to switch to a modern device, we just need a list of requirements so we can suggest a modern replacement.

    Thanks,

    Stephen

  • Hello Stephen,

Customer is looking for a similar product that has a minimum input voltage of 15v and a maximum output voltage of 5v and a minimum output current of 3A.

The IC will be used to power several servo motors, therefore it needs a high current output.

Let me know for any additional information needed.

    Thanks and regards,

    Art

  • Hi Art,

Will this load be 3A steady state?  Or will it be pulses for microseconds?

At 15V - 5V = 10V across the LDO, and 3A load, you would need to be dissipating 30W.  This is way too much for an LDO, but this kind of power is fine for a small switching converter.

If the customer believes the high current is pulsed (less than 50us), then perhaps we can consider the RMS values to look for a device.  We could then look for an LDO with less current capability but it would still be adequate for this job.  Otherwise you will want to review switching converter options from one of our switching groups.

    Thanks,

    Stephen
