BQ40Z50-R2: battery gauge and protections

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50,

Hi Ti Expert,

In my project application, a battery backup system is used.In this battery backup system, we need some communication supported Battery gauging(State of charge and No.of cycles of battery completed) and protections requirements(over charging current, over discharging current protections) for 4S,20AH lithium iron battery. From the previous discussions with TI experts they suggested BQ40z50 IC. From my study, I selected BQ40z50-R2 IC because one of  application specified in the datasheet is battery backup/UPS system.  Is it ok to select BQ40z50-R2 IC for the above gauging and protection requirements or i need to change to BQ40z50.

Best Regards,

  • Hello Muhammed,

Both the gauges can be uploaded with different firmware, you can purchase the BQ40z50 and upload the -R4 firmware to get all the latest updates. Or you can upload the -R2 which is a little older.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt keller,

Is it versions of BQ40z50 ICs are recommonded for new designs. There is only evaluation module is available in online electronics distributors and the individual ICs of BQ40z50 Versions are unavailable. Is it  Individual ICs  are available in the online distributors soon.

    Best Regards,

    Muhammed Rafi C K

  • Hi Muhammed,

It is the same IC for both BQ40z50 and BQ40z50-R2 so you can use either. The different firmware versions offer new features and potentially some bug fixes, you can see the specific difference in the change lists. We recommend using the evaluation modules for initial development because it is the easiest way to get started with our gauges and allows for easier debugging. I cannot say when individual ICs will be available again due to silicon shortages.

    Best,
