UCC28C42: is it safe to use a Zener diode to suppress VDD transient voltage up to 25V?

Part Number: UCC28C42

Customer mentioned during surge test, the VDD voltage test might be transient up to 25V for about 10S. Is it safe to use a Zener diode or TVS diode for VDD? Thank you.

  • 10 seconds is a relatively long time.  They may be able to use a TVS if it has enough power rating to survive 10s.

Several things to consider when selecting the TVS:

    1) The ABS MAX of the UCC28C42 is 20V, recommended working range of UCC28C42 is 18V maximum.  Some kind of clamp is necessary for 25V input.

    2) TVS can have a wide range of clamp voltages, min/typ/max.

    3) TVS must clamp at 20V maximum.  Also, minimum clamping voltage must be above customers maximum VDD working voltage.
