TLC59116: Can we drive mosfet using the output of TLC59116 ?

Part Number: TLC59116

Hi,

Greetings

We are using the LED Driver TLC59116 in our product for directly driving the RGB LEDs using PWM. The LEDs are driven by 12V rail and with current of around 100mA. The Heat pad of this LED driver is heating the PCB too much. And now we want to drive the LEDs with 200mA for higher intensity

So I was wondering if can we drive the LEDs using the mosfets and the mosfets through the TLC59116 output pins using PWM. Is it possible? Please let me know what I need to do to drive mosfet through TLC59116 output pins. Do I need to connect a Pull-up at the output pin of this LED Driver? Are the TLC59116 output pins capable of driving the mosfets using the PWM?

Our company had procured lot many quantities of this TLC59116 chip for production which we do not want to replace or change with other chip ?

Your help will be highly appreciated.

  • Hi Vihang,

For the heating problem, I assume that you have the TLC59116 with VQFN package (32). You could add serial resistors in OUT0~OUT15 to dissipate some of the heat. In addition to that, you could combine two channels for a 200mA current, if you intend to drive less LEDs.

For the MOSFET implementation, it is feasible to do what you said. Each output pin needs a pull-up structure. I have uploaded a pdf file for the calculation of pull-up resistors as a reference resource to your design.

  • Hi Aaron,

    Thank you for your reply.

This thread has resolved my query. I will be going to built and test this MOSFET ciruit with TLC59116 in the coming days and will update you

Thanks once again for your support
