in figure 10 of the datasheet (page 6) it shows the SOA of the FET. In the screenshot of the image i have a red dot the represents my operating point. I read that as operating outside of the safe operating area, is that correct?

Thanks for the inquiry. It certainly looks like your operating point exceeds the 10μs SOA limit. Can you share your actual operating conditions: VDS, IDS and pulse width? Please visit the MOSFET Support & training page at the link below. There you will find all sorts of technical information on TI FETs including a blog on how we test and spec SOA in our datasheets. Our FETs are tested to failure and the curves in the datasheet are derated from the point of failure to insure they will operate reliably in the application.
