I want to know the reason behind adding BQ77216 "Battery protector IC" in BQ76952 reference design while BQ76952 IC itself has the capability of primary and secondary protections which can disable charge and discharge FETs and can also blow the fuse off.

Hi Mohammed,

Some applications may require an independent IC for secondary protection. This may be required by some industry standards. This really depends on the requirements for your application.

If the battery is short-circuited, and simultaneously the BQ76952 IC goes into fault mode, Will the BQ76952 IC be able to protect the pack from short circuit without BQ77216?

The BQ76952 is designed to protect in the case of short circuit. It also have multiple checks to shut off the FETs if there is a problem detected in the operation of the device (RAM corruption, watchdog timeout, etc). So in theory it should protect the pack.

But there is always the possibility that an IC can malfunction. This is the reason some standards require separate ICs to perform the primary and secondary protection functions. It is really determined by the standards you are required to meet for your application and your interpretation of those standards.

BQ76952 family has 5 devices (BQ76952, BQ7695201,BQ7695202, BQ7695203, BQ7695204). Can I buy any of the these available IC and modify the communication interface as required or do I have to buy exactly the same IC for my application? (I am trying to find a way out of the chip shortage!)

Hi Mohammed,

I recommend buying the IC that matches your application. It is possible to reconfigure one of the other devices, but it is a little complicated - you need to communicate with the configured communication protocol in order to change the comm type and then you need to program OTP, etc.
