LM2936Q-Q1: Layout Change Required

Part Number: LM2936Q-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7B81-Q1, TL720M05-Q1

Hey Team,

I am looking at moving from the LM2936Q-Q1 to the TPS7B81-Q1. Both packages would be TO-252, however the LM2936Q-Q1 is a 3-pin package and the other is 5-pin.

I see that there is an EN pin that should be pulled HI and a secondary GND pin.

Is a layout change necessary to swap over? Are there any reliable ways to accomplish this without a layout change?

Thanks for the help!

Dajon McGill

  • Hi Dajon,

I would not recommend trying to put a KVU package on a NDP pad. In theory it would be possible to do it manually but if you are relying on a reflow oven then it would be very difficult to reliably get the VIN (pin 1)  and EN (pin 2) pins soldered onto the pin 1 pad while also soldering OUT (pin 5) but not DNC (pin 4) to the pin 3 pad. Hence, I think a layout change would be needed.

    Nick

  • Hey Nick,

Is there a device you would recommend that could be a drop-in replacement for the LM2936Q-Q1 NPD package?

Here is my parametric search for the features needed, NDP TO-252 package, Reverse Input Voltaeg Protection.

  • Hi Dajon,

As far as package, TL720M05-Q1 in the TO-252 package would fit the footprint of the LM2936Q-Q1 NPD package. The packages are not identical but the dimensions are very similar.

As far as other specs, the TL720M05-Q1 has the desired reverse polarity protection, but without operating conditions I cannot evaluate any further whether it would work.

    Regards,

    Nick
