BQ25892: Oddity in charging behavior. Charge current jumps up, then goes to 0, then resumes until end of charging cycle

Part Number: BQ25892
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TEST

The charge current looks like this:

This is a plot from data logged with Battery Management Studio that is monitoring the gas gauge IC on the battery pack.

Vertical axis is current in mA.  Horizontal axis is time.  I'm charging a 1S3P Li-Ion pack.

I'm also dumping most of the BQ25892 registers to a terminal window.

What is causing the charger to suddenly increase the charge current, then stop charging, and then resume again?

Thanks

  • Hi,

    For the charge profile,

1.What are VBUS (voltage at VBUS pin), IVBUS, VBAT (voltage at BAT pin), IBAT, VSYS, ISYS?

2.Could you please provide all register readings of the charger?

    Thanks,

    Ning.

  • VBUS = 12V

I'll re-run the test and monitor the VBAT voltage on the charger.  I have VBAT at the battery but with the charge current there will be a difference.

ISYS = 0.  Our product is turned off.  IVBUS has 3A available from a USBc PD chip.

Do you want the register readings from REG0E - REG12 as well?  I'll have to program the charger to make those periodic readings if so.

  • Hi,

Please take all register readings (REG00-REG14) and as much as possible voltage/current data (e.g. every 1 second) during charging profile testing.

Please check especially REG0B - REG14 for the charger status and fault.

    Thanks,

    Ning.

  • Hi,

We have not heard from you for a while. This thread is considered resolved and closed.
