TPS23881: PoE+ using 48 V supply

Part Number: TPS23881

Hi.

We would like to use the TPS23881/2 device for PoE+ (802.3at Type 2) using a 48 V supply. In the datasheet it is mentioned that the official spec requires 50 V to achieve this (to ensure that at least 25.5 W can be transferred over 100m CAT5e cable), but we are hoping to achieve the full 25.5 W with 48V at the PSE using shorter cable runs or custom, low resistance cables. We plan on using an MCU on the board to configure the relevant registers if required.

  • Hi Wian,

Yes these devices are still capable of operating with a 48V supply. For the 30W applications, the standard requires at least 50V; so at 48V it would technically be nonstandard; however, if your PD is capable of receiving the power and voltage since you're using shorter cables, then operating at 48V on the PSE is no issue. Thanks!
