LM2852: Question regarding SGND in this LM2852

Part Number: LM2852

Hi, since I am very new to this field, my question may be very trivial.

In this part, there are 2 ground pins (PGND, SGND).

As I read it, I am a bit confused about this ground.

The typical application schematic of this part shows an example connection of this part with external passive components and ground.

However, I have difficulty distinguishing ground. Which ground is SGND or PGND?

Also, could you please let me know if I have to distinguish two grounds? Is it possible to connect them together?

Thank you in advance for your help!

  • Hi Jay,

The PGND is the ground to be used for the power FETs and the SGND is the ground that is used by the AVIN pin and internal control circuits. Figure 1 on page 3 of the EVM-User Guide shows how to connect the PGND and SGND. Both are connected to the thermal pad.

The PGND typically has a lot of noise from the switching currents it carries. It is important this current doesn't flow through the SGND to keep it noise free - so that the internal circuits are not affected.

    Best regards,

    Varun
