TPS274160EVM: Output protection

Hello,

At the TPS274160B datasheet it is stated that the outputs are tolerant to voltage surge of 1kV over 1.2/50uSec.

At the TPS274160B EVM there are optional TVS diodes at the outputs.

The suggested TVS diodes are SMBJ36A-13-F. The Ipp of these diodes is 10.3A, which is not sufficient for 1kV / 42ohm surge.  So at what scenario these TVS diodes should be used if the device is surge proof and they can't stand the surge current?

    Hi Asaf,

    The TVS diode from output to ground is for inductive load voltage clamping. When there's inductive load, the output will go very negative when the switch cut off. The TVS at the output is intended to help in this case. The device itself can withstand the surge condition as the datasheet outlined, and put TVS from Vs to GND and VS to IC_GND would help absorb surge energy.
