BQ24640: Is it possible to simply use a zener to limit VCC input?

Part Number: BQ24640

Hi

I wish to use bq24640 to charge a supercapacitor bank of 4* (2.7V 50F) by a generator with an output range of 9V to 42V.

When the supercapacitors are fully charged there is a potential danger of overvoltage. In the typical application schematic, there is an R6 of 10 Ohm in the power path of VCC. I am considering a slight modification with R6 (10Ohm) replaced by a 100Ohm with a zener diode (1W 28V) connected to VCC (see illustration attached). Is it a viable solution to fit in a supply voltage as high as 42V?
