BQ24780S: BTST resistor design

Part Number: BQ24780S

Hi Team,

My customer has a burnt issue on BTST resistor.  They use 0603 size 3.3 ohm for Rboot.

1. Does this resistance have any concern?

2. If customer follow our EVM design 6.8 ohm, will it improve this issue? Or, should we decrease resistance to 1 ohm?

Best regards,

Hardy

  • Hi Hardy,

I would suggest the following (points does not align with your questions 1 and 2):

    1. Switch to a high pulse resistor. Some companies are really good at those. They usually have very detailed resistor datasheets on pulse rating. It can be the same package and resistance.

    2. Increase the resistance to 6.8 ohm like on the EVM. If you increase the resistance, peak pulsed current will decrease and therefore power dissipation.

    3. Go for a bigger package with higher power dissipation rating.

I would try the second point first. Maybe also look at the gate charge of their MOSFETs and potentially find better ones.

Thanks and I hope this helps,

    Peng
