TPS61094: The usage of forced buck mode

Part Number: TPS61094

Hello Expert,

I have question for TPS61094's forced buck mode.
I cannot understand the usage of forced buck mode.
I suspected that super capacitor is charged by buck converter in normal condition and super capacitor supply power during Vin is halted.
However, datasheet only explained super capacitor is charged by Vin using buck converter and there isn't explained how to use charged energy on super cap.

Would you tell me the purpose of force buck mode and  expected  end application?

Best regards,

  • Hi Kazuki-san,

    Please use auto buck-boost mode if you wish to charge supercapacitor when Vin is present, and use supercapacitor's energy on Vout and Vin is halted;

    Force buck mode is used when Vin<Vout_target and customer still wishes to charge supercapacitor. In auto buck-boost mode, the BUCK_ON mode (when supercapacitor is charging) will be entered only when VIN>VOUT_target+100mV and Vout>Vout_target. So in some use cases when customer has a Vin<Vout_target, they can use Force-buck mode to force charge supercapacitor, and manually turn the mode back to auto buck-boost mode when supercapacitor completes charging.

  • Hi Wenhao-san,

    Thank you for your explanation.
    I understand what is the forced buck mode but I cannot imagine usage and end application for this mode.
    Would you tell me usage and target end application of Forced back mode?

  • Hi Kazuki-san,

    Some customer intends to use TPS61094 just for a switch +a linear charger and they do not wish to boost up Vout through supercapacitor's voltage; We have also seen customer has low Vin but still wishes to charge supercapacitor and boost up output when Vin is not present. This is the reason why we leave force buck mode;
