TPS7B84-Q1: The maximum output voltage of adjustable device

Part Number: TPS7B84-Q1

Hi teams

Customer is using TPS7B84-Q1 adjustable output version in their project. They noticed that the maximum output voltage in datasheet is 18V (Shown in below diagram)

They want to know why we this part can't output a voltage higher than 18V? What we happen when this device output a voltage higher than 18V?

They have tested that it could output 18.5V and no issue have been found so far.

  • Hi Gabriel,

It is likely that this part was only intended and designed to be used up to Vout = 18V. The part is only specified and tested up to 18V, so correct operation is not guaranteed outside of this range, but this is not to say that it won't work. Of course it is not recommended to use parts outside of specification since the rest of the specs are no longer guaranteed.

    Regards,

    Nick

  • Hi Nick,

    thank you for your reply.
I have another question, whether there is a Zener diode inside the LDO output terminal. If there is a Zener diode, what is its minimum Zener voltage?
    regards

  • Hi,

The output pin does not have a Zener diode, but it does have an ESD cell composed of back-to-back diodes. The nominal forward voltage at room temperature of these diodes is about 0.7V.
