BQ76940: AFE for 46S (14x4) Design

I would like to check how to achieve multi-battery monitor with TI AFE BQ769x0 series.

When the cell number is more than 15S, for example 56S(14*4), how can I get all the cells information with 1 host through I2C bus?

(The I2C address of BQ76940 is permanently stored in EEPROM and cannot be modified.)

 

I used to design BMS with another AFE IC BQ76PL455A and it supports daisy-chain communication for multi-module or battery application.

Does BQ769x0 series support this function with I2C address setting by user?

    No, you would not be able to change the I2C address. You may be able to use an I2C isolator to communicate with the devices through I2C, like the ISO1541 I2C isolator, as shown in the TIDA-01093 reference design.

    However, I would recommend you stick with parts like the BQ76PL455A-Q1 for higher stacked applications. Although it is possible to stack a higher amount of ICs with the BQ76940, we usually see and recommend stacking up-to two BQ76940 ICs.

    The BQ76940 can easily break with stacked applications. If stacking the BQ76940, make sure to have proper cell connection order, starting with the bottom IC.
