TPS54160: Replacement to TPS54060

Part Number: TPS54160
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54060

Hi Team,

Our customer would like to confirm if the TPS54060 can be replaced by the TPS54160. According to our customer,

I'm aware of slva592, which suggests that they are compatible for our purposes. However I'm a bit skeptical if the compensation of the circuit would be appropriate between the two.

From the datasheet I can see that the output stage is increased in size to accommodate the higher current capabilities of the TPS54160. This is also visible in the ~3x increment of gm_ps.

Now I have used the AVG simulation models provided by TI to simulate the performance difference between the two and found that there are significant differences when I place the two components in the same test bench.

Can you confirm that this is the case, or is it an issue related to the simulation model, test bench, etc.

You find the simulation results below.

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hello Danilo,

The app note you are referring to is comparing the "A" version of the devices to the "non-A".

What you observed is expected - the higher current device will have different compensation.

I think, in general, if you design for the higher current part you may be able to use the lower current IC as drop in replacement directly. The inductor and diode will be rated for the higher current limit.

The loop response (with the lower current part dropped in) may be acceptable with the existing higher current BOM design, but it would be good to double check in simulation/calculations what you expect to get in terms of phase margin. You can webench or the excel based calculator here:https://www.ti.com/lit/zip/slvc432

    I hope this helps.
