TPS65217: Behavior after an overvoltage condition

Hello,

We have one board using a TPS65217 and a AM3352 microcontroller. The PMIC is used in 5V only. 5V is connected to AC, BAT pins are pull-down according to document SLVA901. Note that the latest datasheet specifies to let these pins open by the way.

When running various tests, I noticed that if I artificially create an overvoltage condition on AC, let's say 6.5V during 50ms, then the PMIC enters the OFF state. This is what is written in the datasheet. But, I would have expect that the PMIC restart by itself. It's not the case. To be clear, AC does 5V -> 6.5 -> 5V.

  • Which conditions trigger precisely the overvoltage event ? There is a threshold, but is there a minimal duration of the overvoltage ?
  • Why the PMIC stays in the off state ?

    I have reviewed the information in your message and wanted to clarify that our application report SLVA901 provides information to prevent the lockup of the TPS65217 PMIC when the input voltage drops below UVLO and returns to stable operation. This would relate to an undervoltage event. Your case is different and relates to an overvoltage condition.

    Whenever an overvoltage fault occurs during operation, all power rails are shut down and the device goes to the OFF state. The device stays in the OFF state until any of the wake-up events specified in the datasheet occur (see spec capture below). One of the wake-up events that can get the PMIC out of the OFF state is by momentary pulling PB_IN low.
