TPS62740: Selection of Batteries for Metering devices.

Part Number: TPS62740
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR6047, TPS62840

Dear Ti Team,

We are currently working on water meter with MSP430FR6047 IC, we are powering the uC with  lithium thionyl chloride battery of V3.6 to DC-DC TPS60740 and we are getting V out as 2.5V, but in TPS62840's Technical Documents you have suggested to use lithium manganese dioxide( Li-MNO2 )instead of lithium thionyl chloride. I just wanted to know which one will be more suitable for water meters for long run with Indian climatically  conditions. we want to use  it for long run.

Please assists on this issue.

Thanks ,

Vinayak

  • Hi Vinayak,

Lithium thionyl chloride (LiSOCl2) batteries are widely used in low current long-term applications like smart gas and water meters. The high capacity, high energy density and low self-discharge rate makes these batteries the ideal candidate for such long-term applications. However, the batteries have a limited output current capability and therefore; lithium manganese dioxide (LiMnO2) batteries are gaining popularity, because of its strong capability for high pulse currents without suffering any performance degradation and without the need of external Hybrid-Layer Capacitors (HLC) or Super-Pulse Capacitors (SPC), which are required for LiSoCl2 primary cells.

Application specific requirements always governs the choice of battery. Therefore; we do not have any specific battery recommendation but always allow the customer to make the final decision based on his application requirements, cost and other trade-offs.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
