TPS2373-4EVM-758: C67 and C5 alternate footprint

Part Number: TPS2373-4EVM-758

Hi,

TPS2373-4EVM-758 in this EVM the capacitor location at C67(1000pF 2kV) and C5 (1000pF 2kV) were used 1812 and 1803 footprint.

Can I use same capacitor value(1000pF 2kV) in 1206 package instead of 1812 or 1803 package on my new design? Or Should I stay with same package(1812) ?

Because better component availability and to reduce my board size, I want to go for 1206 package.

Kindly guide me to go further.

Thanks in advance.

  • hello,

These capacitors are there to create a dedicate path for common mode current. We have to do this because transformers have parasitic capacitances that must be addressed -- or surge/ESD will travel through the transformer unrestricted. You can see the current surge paths in the picture below.

So the size of the cap could be related to the power rating. Therefore, it depends on the application of your end equipment. If it is indoors and the products will be deployed in a region of the world that has reliable power / building protection, then you can use smaller size. If the application is outdoors, I would stick with the larger caps.
