TPS1HA08-Q1: Absolute max rating for Reverse battery

Part Number: TPS1HA08-Q1

Hi team,

This series of devices have absolute max rating as “Reverse battery voltage, VRev, t ≤ 3 minutes” but there is no clear condition for example the allowable reverse current or existence of reverse battery protection resistor and diode at the GND.

Could you tell me the details?

It's okay to exceed 3 minutes only if there is a reverse current prevention element in series with the input, isn't it?

Regards,

  • Hi Atsushi,

The max reverse current will be limited by the thermal capability of the device. Too high of the current will cause too much resistive loss inside the device and eventually damage the device. To calculate the max reverse current, customer can take into account the max device temp, ambient temp and thermal resistance of the device.

The protection resistor and diode at the GND will help block the reverse current to the controller portion of the device. The max reverse ground current is 50mA. Without the protection diode and resistor, the controller will be damaged.

If the diode at the input is present, all current path are blocked and it's okay to exceed the 3 mins. If only the GND network diode is there, then the thermal will be the limiting factor. However, if there's chance of reverse battery, either diode at the input or diode at the GND will be needed.

    Regards,

    Yichi
