Can a single PWM signal drive a dual input driver?

  • Intro

    It is sometimes necessary to drive a dual input driver (A driver with two individually controlled channels) with a single PWM input. This could be because of a limitation in the controller used, or PCB layout considerations. The easiest solution is to simply use a PWM input driver such as the UCC20520, but sometimes a different UVLO or package is required. The below external circuit can be used in these situations to create complementary inputs from a single PWM signal.

    Converting a Single PWM Signal to Drive a Dual Input Driver

    As shown in Figure 1, a simple transistor based inverter can be used to invert the signal for INB, while directly connecting the PWM signal to INA. This is effective because the deadtime can be controlled by the driver, making it less important to match the propagation delay of INA and INB.
