TPS736: ambient temp range

Part Number: TPS736

In the d/s, it specifies the ABS max. junction temp is up to 150degree. and also it specifies that the recommended junction temp is 125degree. we're confused about this.

What's the recommended max. ambient temp? Is it able to support up to 125degree?

  • Hi Brian,

We recommend that the device be operated in such a way so that the Junction temperature TJ ≤ 125ºC. This way all the relevant specs mentioned in Table 6.5 will hold. If the device is operated so that 125ºC ≤ TJ ≤ 150ºC, then we cannot be certain if the Electrical specs will hold, but the device will not suffer any long term reliability issues. The Junction temperature and Ambient temperature are related by the power equation : TJ = TA + PD*RθJA, where TA is the Ambient temperature, RθJA is the Junction to Ambient thermal resistance (provided in table 6.4) and PD is the power dissipated across the LDO (equal to (VIN - VOUT)*IOUT).

Hence, unless the power dissipation is very small, TJ is always larger than TA. Operating at TA = 125ºC and dissipating sufficient power PD could result in TJ ≥ 125ºC, causing the device to fall out of spec. Therefore, the maximum Ambient temperature the LDO can support, would largely depend on the power Pdissipated across the LDO. Thanks!
