TPS25940: absolute maximum Tj and thermal shutdown threshold

Part Number: TPS25940

Hi Team,

According to e2e post below, I can assume Tj=160(thermal sutdown threshold) and calculate the acceptable maximum power.

However, the absolute maxmum Tj in datasheet is 150ºC, Tj beyond 150ºC may cause permanent damage to the device, then why can we estimate Pmax by Tj=160ºC?

Regards,

  • Hi Charles,

Damage at 150C will happen when you continuously operate device at 150C for long time.

Abs max junction temperature of 150C means that in normal device operation we should make sure that device is not operated for long durations at 150C or beyond that. Operating device for extended periods at abs max rating or beyond that will affect its reliability.

Generally high power dissipation happens during overcurrent event which is a transient event so device will reach 160C within some ms and hit thermal shutdown.
