UCC28720: Constant current control application

Part Number: UCC28720
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV110

Hi,

Can we use UCC28720  for constant current control application (example: solenoid control).

Is it possible to disable the voltage control loop and use only the current control loop.

  • Hi, Akash:

    Thanks for asking.

UCC28720 can support constant current control. but it can not disable constant voltage control.

Once the constant voltage control is disabled, the output voltage would not be stable ( may go high till OVP triggered).

This is an example of  the relationship of constant voltage and constant current. The max output current is IOCC around. The CV/CC converter would support max IOCC till the VCC drops to UVLO. It the end system requests the lower current, i.e. 1A. The converter can support with 1A and stable output voltage.

Please refer the detail description on page 13 in datasheet, and let us know if this function works in your application.

    Regards,

    Wesley

  • Hi Wesley,

    Thanks for your reply.

Actually we are trying to use UCC for controlling a solenoid coil current and not for flyback converter.

TI's DRV110 is currently out of stock and hence looking for an alternative solution for realizing PWM current regulation. Is there any other solution you can suggest us for PWM current regulation.

  • Hi, Akash:

    Thanks for your reply.

Since DRV110 belongs another team, to provide you the most suitable solution. Would you please create another thread for this request?

I believe the experts would provide you the best solutions.

    Thanks.
