BQ4050: bqStudio Missing Tabs

Part Number: BQ4050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, , BQ35100, GPCCEDV

Hello,

I'm trying to configure a BQ4050 and I am unable to find the necessary tabs in bqStudio. In particular, I am missing the Chemistry and Golden Image tabs:

If I select a different chip (in this case, I arbitrarily selected bq35100) I can see the tabs:

The bq4050 device datasheet explicitly directs us to the Chemistry page in section 8.2.1 to update the device chemistry profile, and in section 8.1 details how to produce a "golden image". How do we find these tabs in bqStudio?

  • Hi Sam,

That is an error in the datasheet. Chemistry menu items are only available when using impedance track products. BQ4050 is CEDV based so the chemistry menu will not show up. For the golden image, you can go to the "Firmware" tab and export the srec from the device.

    Best,

    Jessica

  • Thank you, Jessica. I'll try the export srec feature tomorrow morning and follow up or mark this issue resolved.

  • I am able to pull the srec, but I'm not sure what to do with this data. My goal is to capture a screenshot of all of the registers and translate it to a series of I2C (SMBus) writes in order to configure this chip in our device on startup. How do I parse this srec file to obtain that data?

Also, I am using LiMnO2 batteries, but I am not able to select that chemistry in bqStudio:

Is LiCoO2 close enough? I can provide more details about the battery if required.

    Thanks,

    Sam

  • Hello Sam,

If you are trying to program the gauge you should use the flash stream files following SLUA801. This should be done after the GPCCEDV process and setting up all your DF settings in bqStudio, you export the bq.fs (FW+DF) or df.fs(just DF).

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
