UCC21520: Why the UCC20520 can't drive GaN devices?

Part Number: UCC21520
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC20520, UCC20225

Hi Team,

The FAQ shows that there are few differences in the electrical characteristics of UCC20520 and UCC20225. Our customer would like to understand why the UCC20520 can't drive GaN devices. Can you please enlighten us?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi, Danilo,

I assume you are referring to this FAQ? https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management-group/power-management/f/power-management-forum/1052108/faq-what-are-the-differences-between-the-dual-channel-isolated-gate-drivers

GaN devices usually have a lower gate-to-source voltage requirement than the other technologies. So, we promote our devices with a 5V UVLO in applications utilizing GaN transistors. If the customer is looking at GaN devices with higher gate-to-source requirements then any of the parts will work, assuming the correct UVLO level.

  • Hi Don,

I have similar question about following devices where UVLO is equal, can you please comment if UCC20520 can be used with GaNFET?

  • Hi, Furkan,

    Nice to hear from you!

Yes, there is no inherent reason why the UCC20520 can't be used to drive GaN. We just tried to simplify the product selection for customers, but it seems it's caused more confusion.

So, if all the specs are ok for your design, the UCC20520 can be used to drive GaN transistors.

    Best regards,

    Don
