LM317HV: Simulation model and EVM availability from the variant devices

Part Number: LM317HV
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL783, LM317, TPS783, TPS7A4001

Hi LDO Team,

My customer is looking at LM317HV and TL783.

1) I notice there're PSPICE model and TINA model for LM371 . I wonder if TI has simulation model for LM317HV as well. If not, can I use LM371 model for LM317HV?

2) There is no simulation model for TL783. Is there any similar model to check the basic characteristics?

3) Two devices both support TO-220 package, but it looks several details are a little bit different. COuld you confirm that if two devices are directly replaceable P2P?

4) LM317HV does not provide EVM. Could you suggest a proper EVB for TO-220 so that I can rework it for LM317HV?

Thank you a lot!

  • Hi Ella,

    1. There is not a model for LM317HV. LM317HV has very similar performance to LM317 so the LM317 model can be used in its place.
    2. TPS7A4001 is a newer version of TPS783.
    3. These packages are both of the TO-220 group, but they are different TI packages (NDE and KC). If there is an on-board heatsink, the screw holes might not line up. The pin pitch is basically the same between devices, so the part seems that it would fit in the footprint.
    4. I'm not aware of an EVM that we have that can fit a TO-220.

    Regards,

    Nick

  • Hi Nick,

    1. Customer's requirement is basically input voltage 48V. LM317 might not work for this operating condition. May I know if there is any chance to generate simulation model for LM317HV?

    2. I mentioned TL783, 700mA LDO. TPS783 and TPS7A4001 have much less current capability and are not available for customer use case.

    4. Could you help to find the proper EVM? It looks for me that there's no EVM for TO-220 (KCS, NDE) at all. Customer wants to check the performance of M317HV or TL783. I do not want to lose this chance.

+Otherwise, could you suggest another LDO part that support >60VIN and >0.6A?

  • Hi Ella,

The abs max for each pin is normally not modeled into the PSPICE models, and I've checked the LM317_TRANS model and it also does not have abs max modeled. So, the behavior for the LM317 PSPICE model would be the same as the LM317HV. At this time it is unlikely that we can have a model for LM317HV any time soon.

If they are looking for an LDO that can take >60V input and IOUT > 600mA, the only option is the LM317HV.

I did find an EVM that I wasn't aware of. Find it here:

  • Hi Nick,

    Thank you!

Could you also help find the proper simulation model for TL783? As you mentioned TPS7A4001 is a newer version of TL783, but it has much lower current rating. I don't think theTPS7A4001 TRANS model would work for TL783.

  • Hi Ella,

I checked for released and unreleased models and there is no model for TL783 at this time.
