BQ20Z90: NTC thermistor package with BQ20Z90

Part Number: BQ20Z90

Hi,

We are using BQ20Z90EVM-001 reference design for Battery monitoring and protection circuit in one of our project.

In reference design Through hole NTC 10k (NTC103AT  Samtec) is used for battery temperature measurement.

We want to use SMD 10k NTC in our design like Murata part NCP18XH103F03RB. Is it Ok to use SMD part in place of PTH part?

Also I need recommendation on placing NTC thermistor on surface of battery. We are using cylindrical battery, which surface of the battery is best suitable for temp. measurement using NTC?

Regards,

Raj Kumar Jain

  • Hello Raj,

As long as the NTC chosen has the same B values for the temperature range specified on the NTC datasheet, which it looks like both have very close values.

I would recommend testing with your thermistor to verify the temperature values are reading accurately, but it should be fine.

The best place to place the thermistor is securely on the battery casing. It should be closest to the actual battery temperature, essentially the part that shows heat first would be ideal.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
