TPS2121: Help with TPS2121 for Automatic Switchover Between two Battery Supplies

Part Number: TPS2121
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2116

Hi Team

Could you help the customer with the TPS2121 for the Automatic Switchover Between Two battery Supplies?

IN1 and IN2 both inputs  connect simultaneously, the TPS2121 should use the higher input to the output that means if IN1 is great than IN2, output IN1. or versus. it works like a oring.

Looking forward your reply

  • Harry,

Did you have any details about the actual end application? What is on the load? Are the two supply voltages the same? Is it something like a USB versus battery situation the TPS2121 would be perfect. For lower voltages and lower current we also have the TPS2116 which would have better availability.

If you are looking for a general reference design on how to implement this I would recommend taking a look at the Seamless Switchover reference design:

  • Hi Timothy

    Thanks for your reply soon.

the EE is E-lock. customer uses two sets of battery supply the system for longer work time. but they are worried that direct parallel use of these two sets battery will cause the reverse current when they voltage become unequal gradually. So IN1 and IN2 both are a set of dry battery. Tps2121 works like a oring Mos.

the output will convert to 3.3 by a buck to supply whole system.

I noticed TPS2121 have the feature that priority can be automatically given to the highest input voltage. If it will automatic switch between two supply based on which power's voltage is greater?

  • Henry,

The TPS2116 might work here and will generally have the same features of the TPS2121. What do the load currents look like?

That being said... looking at the TPS2121 you are right, it does have that functionality. This is described in the VCOMP mode of operation of the device (described in 10.5 Highest Voltage Operation (VCOMP)). Essentially in this mode the TPS2121 will automatically output the highest potential supply on the output.

  • Hi Timothy

    Thanks for you reply.

The input voltage rang of 2116`,1.6-5.5v, can not meet the need of customer's system. the max load current is 1A. I will recommend the 2121. Thanks for your support
