TPS43000: TPS43000 for CC mode

Part Number: TPS43000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS546D24A, TPS548D22

Hi E2E,

My customer wants to find the Ic solution for constant current mode, And I found TPS43000. Is this IC can be used in the following project?
Or there are other CC mode ICs you can recommend, thank you.

Input : 12Vdc

Output5.5V / ± 0.5Vdc / 2.1V ~ 4.2Vdc  35A in CC MODE

  • Hello,

Thanks for your message. For your use case, I would suggest using a multi-phase buck converter as your load requires 35 A of current. I will move this thread to the Buck team, so that they can take better care of your request as soon as possible and suggest some more recent parts for your application. Thank you for your patience.

    Kind regards,
    EM

Unfortunately, TI's constant current regulators are not designed to support 35A.  Typically, higher current constant current regulators are built from standard voltage regulating BUCK converters with either:

A current sense amplifier which generates a voltage based on the load current and is fed back into the feedback / voltage sense and the converter regulates voltage from the current sense amplifier to maintain a constant current

A current regulation loop with current sense amplifier, reference, and error amplifier which can inject current into the converter's voltage regulation loop to reduce the regulation voltage if the current reaches it's limit.

The later is commonly used when both a voltage and current loop are desired with a constant current and a constant voltage limit as this provides a more accurate maximum voltage on the constant current supply.

For 12V to 5.5V @ 35A, I would recommend considering 's suggestion of a multi-phase solution due to the potential for high power dissipation.

For a 2-phase solution, the TPS546D24A can be programmed as a constant voltage solution at 5.5V or 2.1-4.2V and is designed to handle 35A in a single or two phase configuration.  It would require an external current regulation loop, but also provides digital monitoring of both voltage and current.

The feedback voltage can also be lowered using the PMBus serial interface to reduce the voltage needed from the current sense amplifier if a direct current regulation conversion if desired.

For a single phase solution, the TPS548D22 is a 40-A D-CAP3 mode control converter that would be capable of converter 12V to 5.5V @ 35A, though heat dissipation could be an issue.  Again, an external current sense and error amplifier to inject the current sense into the voltage would be required.
