BQ25050: Query regarding the description of some terminologies from the datasheet

Part Number: BQ25050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24072, BQ25180

According to the datasheet for BQ25050, it states the functionality of CTRL pin with respect to Icharge current. But in the Electrical Characteristics table, Iin(lim) is defined as the input current limit selected by the CTRL interface. But I don't see a proper definition for Icharge. Is Icharge the output current flown from VBAT or is Icharge the input current flown into IN pin of the chip? If it is the latter, then what is the difference between Icharge and Iin?

  • Hi Nithin,

    Welcome to E2E!

As this is a power path device, the ICHG and ILIM are not exactly the same. The ICHG will be the current going into the battery during the fast charge phase. With powerpath, the total current from the input is shared between the output load and the battery.

In the case where there is no load on OUT, ICHG = IIN.

When there is an output current, IIN = IOUT + ICHG

With this device using an external battery FET, the way the device is able to monitor the current going into the battery is through the input current. This will allow it to implement the charge cycle.

For devices with an internal BATFET, take a look at the BQ2407X family which contains standalone devices such as the BQ24072. We've recently also released the BQ25180, an I2C WCSP refresh of the BQ2407X family featuring shipmode and shutdown mode.

    Best Regards,
