TPS62840: More output capacitance than recommended Cout_max in datasheet?

Part Number: TPS62840

Hello,

I'm considering using TPS6280 to provide power to some cellular module.
The module requires 200µF on is power supply but as we have little room for pulsed current I'd like to make it 300µF or even 400µF.

Problem is that in TPS62840 there is a Cout_max specified (40µF).

What can I do ? Maybe use some ferrite bead to form like a second stage filter ?

Any hints would be appreciated,

Have a good day,

Thomas

  • Hi Thomas,

    - My suggestion would be to use a device which allows a higher effective output capacitance like the TPS62851x family. Please have a look at the datasheet.

    - You could also design a second stage filter but the design could get complicated, solution size increases and also adds to the total solution cost. Most importantly, the loop stability of the converter needs to be tested well with the second stage filter.

    - As it is a cellular module application, how critical is solution size for your application? I believe buck converter modules will also be a good solution for you. However, we do not have low current (<3A) modules that can support large Cout in our current portfolio.

Please have a look at some of our latest modules.
