TPS7H1101A-SP: Current sense CS and current limit PCL

Part Number: TPS7H1101A-SP

If i disable CS by pulling it low to ground, would the current limit work? Based on DS diagrams, CS is using current mirror and is the same used for current limiting also?

or CS and CL current sensing is separate and no dependency?

  • Amar,

I can help.  The confusion is caused by the fact that CS is a multi-function pin.  It is capable of representing a voltage proportional to the current with the appropriate Rcs resistor.

It also is the current limit mode pin.   If the voltage on CS is below ~0.544, then the device will be in constant current or brick wall current limit mode.    If Vcs is greater than 0.544, then the device will be in foldback current limit mode.

Pulling CS low and not using the current sense feature will put the device in constant current limiting mode.  This current limit will be a function of the PCL resistance.

If you do not need current sensing, but want to use foldback current limiting, use an Rcs that will insure Vcs is greater than 0.544 when current limit is reached.   You can simply tie to Vin in this case, or choose a small resistor.

So the solution depends primarily on what current limit mode you want to implement.
