TPS65218D0: Output capacitor package Selection

Part Number: TPS65218D0

Hi Team,

I am using TPS65218D0 to power AM437x. My query is related to Output capacitor at PMIC. Datasheet Recommends 1206 and 0805 packages for 22uF\5.5V and 10uF\3.3V application respectively. Due to space constraint in my design I can use 0402 package. Can this be used? Or is there any specification I must check before finalizing.

  • Hello,

Thanks you for using E2E. The recommended output capacitors in the datasheet are just recommended. Other capacitors can be used as long as they are Ceramic (X5R or X7R) with equivalent or better performance to the ones we recommend. Please also note the min and max capacitance for each rail in the electrical characteristic tables. For example, for DCDC1-3 the output capacitance should not be lower than 10uF and not higher than 100uF. For DCDC4, it should not be lower than 40uF and higher than 100uF. Please refer to the TPS65218D0 datasheet for more information and feel free to reach out if there are any questions. Additionally, the current and temperature plots should be reviewed for the chosen capacitor to understand the derating at the max expected load current for the target operating temperature.

As an additional note, for DCDC4 we strongly recommend having a 100nF in parallel to the output capacitor.

    Thanks,

    Brenda
