BQ28Z610-R1: At ideal state of BQ28z610-r1 cell-1 will be dead

Part Number: BQ28Z610-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ28Z610

Hello TI,

I am working BQ28z610-r1 with battery pack configuration of 2P2S but at ideal state only BQ28z610 is connected to battery pack after day only cell 1 will be discharge till dead ..?

1. How battery pack cell balancing is working into the BQ28z610-r1..?

2. why the only cell 1 will be dead ..?

3. how i can avoid the problem ..?

Thanks,

Rahul

  • Hello Rahul,

That definitely doesn't sound right. Just to confirm, you are seeing Cell 1 heavily discharge while Cell 2 is okay? That is not expected behavior so something must be wrong. Are you comfortable sharing a .gg file or a schematic?

The balancing used in the BQ28z610 is the type that discharges the highest cell to reduce the imbalance, rather than the type that charges the other cells with that energy. In this way, it will cause cells to discharge faster than if you didn't balance. But, 1 day to fully discharge while not keeping balanced anyways (cell 1 being lower than 2) is not expected behavior.

    My questions for you are:

    • Do you see the issue when cell balancing is turned off? Or only when it is on?
    • Are you using all the same chemistries/cells in your pack?
    • Is there any passive draw seen on the cells?

Please let me know, because I don't have much info to work with right now.

    thanks,

    Alex M.
