BQ24314C: Clarification about operating conditions

Part Number: BQ24314C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24308

Hi,

In the datasheet it specifies the the recommendeed operating conditions are:

But then in the appendix 9 it says:

It seems contradictory and misleading. Will my application works if I use this overvoltage and overcurrent protection IC with a Vin =12V and Iin =1A? Both specifications are correct based on the operating conditions but appendix 9 does not match with this assumption.

  • Hello Jose,

This would not work, the over-voltage protection feature for Vin has a threshold of ~5.85-V. At 12-V this would be triggered. This is mentioned in INPUT OVERVOLTAGE PROTECTION of Section 6.5 Electrical Characteristics in the datasheet.

The 30-V range would be the range the pin can safely take and work within specs. I do agree that this can be confusing, so I am sorry about that.

  • HI Luis,

Thanks for your answer, I completely understand your feedback.

Do you think there is any IC of this kind that can fulfill my design requirements of Vin =12V and Iin =1A? I found another overvoltage and overcurrent protection IC named bq24308 but it seems after your explanation that it will not work either.

Maybe you can point me in a better direction since it looks like all these charger front-end protection ICs will not work for 12V.

    Thanks again.

  • Hello Jose,

Yes you are correct, it would not work.

From our group (Battery monitors/Protectors) we have nothing that could work for 12-V. I am not sure if chargers have built-in protections to protect it from certain voltages, you may have to open a new thread for the charger team to help.

    Best of luck!

    Best Regards,
