TPS650864: TPS65086401RSKT Buck2 Query for very low current consumption

Part Number: TPS650864
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65086

Hi,

We are using TPS65086401RSKT device in our design to power up Xilinx MPSOC.

As per the datasheet, Buck 2(0.85V) can support upto 7 to 15A depending upon the type of mosfet used.
Our requirement at 0.85V (O/P from Buck 2) is only 150mA maximum. Is it OK to used Buck 2 for this purpose or will it have any issue since the current consumption is very low?. Is there is minimum load requirement at BUCK2?

  • Hi Santosh,

Thanks for reaching out! TPS65086401 comes pre-programmed with Buck2 configured in Automatic mode (see BUCK2_MODE register bit in datasheet). This will allow the regulator to operate in PFM mode at light load currents.

I strongly recommend, reviewing the session 9.2.1 "Design Requirements" in the datasheet which explains how to select the external components (inductors, capacitors, FET and ILIM resistor) based on specific design requirements like the max expected load current.

    TPS65086401  OTP summary from datasheet:

For reference, the datasheet shows the efficiency plots for one of the Buck controllers (Buck1).

    Thanks,

    Brenda
