TPS92518-Q1: Sustained short to ground on the output

Part Number: TPS92518-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92518

Hi Team,

What is the behavior of the TPS92518-Q1 when the output is shorted to ground and can it be sustained indefinitely without damage to the device?

Thank you,

Jared

  • Jared,

The TPS92518 is a current source which can run into a continuous short indefinitely. The off time of the device is inversely proportional to the output voltage. During output 0V (or close to 0V) the off time can become very long. This is where the max off time setting is required. It should be used in a way where the buck runs at a reasonable frequency. Section 8.3.3 of the datasheet shows operation called Shunt FET dimming, which refers to a shorted output operation.
