TPS62801: low output current inductor selection

Part Number: TPS62801
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62802, TPS62807

Hi team,

Customer is using TPS62801 -> 1V/15mA, TPS62802 -> 1.8V/15mA, input is Li-battery, 3V ~ 4.4V. Since their current output is very small, so they wander if they could use a small saturate current inductor. Could you help comment what current level inductor could them use? And could you also show the calculation material or process? Thanks!

Thanks and Best Regards,

Will

  • Hi Will,

Since this device will be operating at PFM with 15mA load, and there is a minimum 'on time' of the high side FET in PFM, the peak current inductor currents can be higher. Would be best to check the peak inductor current during startup as well as steady state PFM for the external passives they have in the PSPICE Transient model of the device. The saturation current can be set based on the peak inductor current. However there is a chance of damaging the internal FETs of the device if a lower saturation current inductor is chosen and they have a short on the output.

Would the TPS62807, also work for the customer? This is a 0.6A version, but needs a 1uH inductor and also switches at a lower frequency.

    Best regards,
