LM79: Peak current output

Part Number: LM79

Hi,

Good day.

Our customer would like to clarify about the output current of LM7912.

I am looking at a 7912CT/NOPB data sheet. On the first page in the features and description is notes a 1.5A output current,

in the electrical specifications it shows a max current as 2.2A
so is the continuous current 1.5A and if I am using is for an amplifier power it can achieve up to 2.2A
I will need to drive an 80 hz waveform and will require peak current draws of 2A
can I safely push the part to say 2A?

Thank you.

Regards,

Cedrick

  • Hi Cedrick,

The device is only specified up to an output current of 1.5A. It is possible to run the device at 2A continuous (assuming that the part has small headroom and does not enter thermal shutdown), but the EC specs are no longer valid because the operating point is outside of the specified range. The specs likely won't be wildly different when operating at 2A vs 1.5A, but it is generally not advised to operate outside of the datasheet specs because as I mentioned, performance is not guaranteed.

    Regards,

    Nick
