BQ24750 - Battery going into Deep Discharge Mode

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24750

We are facing one problem with BQ24750 Li-ion battery charger IC that we are using in a Handheld terminal.

The Li-Ion battery goes into DEEP DISCHARGE. Shouldn't the battery be cut-off so that deep discharge situation does not arise?

The deep discharged battery does not allow the unit/ terminal to come up again through charging.

Let me know how this problem can be resolved?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

  • The bq24750 battery charger is designed to properly charge the battery, taking into consideration temperature, charge state, etc.  The bq24750 can not regulate the amount of current your system pulls out of the battery.  You can add an SVS http://focus.ti.com/paramsearch/docs/parametricsearch.tsp?family=analog&familyId=527&uiTemplateId=NODE_STRY_PGE_T to your system to disable the system when the battery voltage drops too low.  This is a standard practice used to ensure you do not discharge the battery too far.

A deeply discharged battery can only be safely charged with a fraction of the recommended fast charge current.  If you properly designed the charger to only provide the precharge current with low battery voltages, your system will not be able to start with a deeply discharged battery.  You should only allow the system to turn-on after you charge the battery to an acceptable level where it can source and sink full current.
