LM25184: When I change the EVM transformer to rige core type transformer, it will cause OCP at turn on.

Hello:

I made a transformer using ring core and made it 7uH as same as EVM transformer.

First, I checked the OCP point at 24Vin is 1.12A.

Then I set the output load to 1A and turn on/turn off the power.

I notice that  it will trig the OCP when I turns off the power then turns on immediately, but the situation is random.

Sometimes, it can turns on normally.

CH4: Vin; CH2: Vo; CH3:Ip

    What's the OCP point of the default transformer? Does this effect persist on the default transformer, or just the custom ring core you made?

    I only changed the transformer from EVM, so the schematic is as same as below:

    The OCP point of the default transformer is 1.25A

    The OCP point of the custom ring core I made is 1.12A

    Even if I set the output load over 1.25A using the default transformer, the output voltage will rise to lower level immediately .

    If I use ring core and turn on over 0.9A, the output voltage will latch 0V for a while, sometimes never go back to normal.

    I suspect your inductor may be 7uH at light load, but is most likely saturating and drooping below it's "nominal" value you measured. The datasheet specs say that you need an ISAT of ~5A. 

    The default coilcraft part is 6.3uH at 5A for example.

    You might need to use a ring core with either different magnetic material, or a larger core in order to meet the ISAT = ~5A spec.

    先回答你關於變壓器感量。使用自製ring core,在輸出滿載~1.12A下,變壓器一次側電流並沒有出現飽和穩定後切換頻率相近。這應該已經足夠表示滿載感量相同且沒有飽和。

    我想請教另外一件事。

    以下波型為兩種狀態,分別代表輸出開起來以及開不起來的狀態:

    同樣在C4(M4)VIN turn on後→C3(M3)為EN pin訊號→C1(M1)為SS pin訊號→C2(M2)輸出有時候會開不起來

    note: SS在輸入啟動後5ms ready

    再去觀察C1(M1)輸出電流、C3(M3)一次側電流可以發現,只要IC可以在輸入啟動後約10ms將切換頻率加快,就可以正常啟動輸出

    下圖C1為SW pin可以看出頻率加快

    我想問是,可否說明SS pin明明是在5ms下就已經ready,為什麼輸出要在10ms開始才動作。此時的IC是經由甚麼判斷才將頻率提升?

    有這些資訊才可以解釋為什麼有些狀況輸出會起不來。

    越接近OCP點越容易重現輸出電壓起不來的狀態;但半載以下都沒問題

    後來我有嘗試將load的Von點設為1V(輸出電壓要到1V後load才會進行抽載),就可以滿載開機沒問題

    這能帶給你甚麼訊息嗎?為什麼負載一直抽載的情況下,IC就無法順利啟動?

    the E-load will have load current over shoot condition happened when the output start to build up or output is low. It may caused IC come to OCP. That's why I suggest you can take look at the E-load current.

    You can also try pure resistor load, it will avoid any unexpected load condition caused by E-load.

    此章波型的C1,M3就是輸出電流,可以看出IC動作前時輸出電流長得相同

    M3(淺黃色)如果能順利啟動

    C1(深黃色)輸出無法啟動

    另外C3,M3為一次側變壓器電流,長得相同

    C4,M4輸入電壓

    M2為可正常開啟的輸出電壓;C2我沒存到,開不起來的狀態輸出維持0V

    it looks like M1 are load current(1.5A) ,  and C3 are primary SW current waveform. 

    what is C1 waveform test point?  the load current should be dc. 

    and have you tried resistor load?

    C1也是load current,且負載電流抽載相同,發生的情況為當我Vin關掉再重新開啟時有機會遇到。

    此時的load current之所以沒有變成DC值是因為PWM頻率一直維持在9kHz,導致能量傳遞到輸出有限。只有在PWM on time附近有傳遞能量時輸出才抽的到電流,反之休息時電流會降為0,導致看起來會一直切換。

    其實還有一個C2輸出電壓的波型,但我沒有儲存到。C2為一直維持在接近0V的電壓。

    我有試過 resistor load,是可以正常開啟沒問題的。問題是為什麼CC mode(constant current mode下),有時開的起來有時開不起來?

    I guess if you use  1ms to catch load current waveform, you may see high spike which caused OCP. but when sample rate is low, it may not be able to shown in the socpe.

    but if resistor load is no problem and changing the loading current threshold is also fine, highly possibility is load condition different in different on/off time
