TPS62082: 3.3V output at 100% duty cycle

Part Number: TPS62082

Hey,

I am designing a power management solution to generate 3.3V output with max. 1A. The Input will come either from an USB-Plug (5V, up to 2 A)or an LiPo with a range of 3V to 4.2V.

Is it possible with the TPS62082 to generate 3.3V 1A from Input 3.3V-5V ? I know that in this case the LiPo is not discharged down to 3.0 V but that's fine for me.

With D/S section 8.3.2 formula (1) I calculated, that I can only go down to around 3.4 to 3.5 V input according to what current I need and what resistance I have.

So it is not possible to have 3.3V input and get a 3.3V output, right?

  • Hi Jonathan,

Yes your analysis is correct. When operating in 100% mode (high side FET turned on always), there will be a voltage drop across the RDS(on) of this FET and the DCR of the inductor. So your output will always be lower than your input by an amount that depends on the load current. Equation 1 in section 8.3.2 of the datasheet is the right one to use here.

    Best regards,
