LMR23630AEVM: LMR23630AEVM Evaluation Board - setting output current

Part Number: LMR23630AEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMR23630

regarding: LMR23630AEVM Evaluation Board Page 22: www.ti.com/.../lmr23630.pdf page 22 does not indicate how to set the peak output current. Many references in the datasheet speak of a 3Amp max output current. I am measuring 650mA - how is that current set? Why is it so low - when the specified max output current is 3Amp There is no mention of how to set the output current, there is only mention of how to set the output voltage. Please advise.

  • hi,

LMR23630 is a constant voltage- output step-down regulator, so output current will be Vout/Rout, this current is limited <3A ,over 3A will triggrt OC .

  • I agree... the issue is that if i put a current meter across the output, (essentially a short circuit) I get 650mA - not 3Amps

  • That may be the current in the meter ,not real loading, do you have a CC mode eload, or source meter, try to source a current on output.

Another way is output  connect resistor and a current meter, then the current will be Vout/(Rmeter +Rload) .example as R= 5V/ 3A =1.6ohom. try to test the current.

  • i placed a 2Ohm resistor from the VOut+ to the load - which was essentially a short - and all is well... The issue i have is the description of over current protection in your documentation... if Iout > 3amps is sensed, then the Iout drops to 650mA... my mistaken understanding of your product literature was that the output current would be limited to 3amps... that's a big difference and i would hope you would clarify that in the data sheet. other than that, I'm happy with the product and support.
